Steel or Plastic? – What kind of Fuel Can Do I need?

When it comes to buying the right fuel can (or Jerry Can) the options can be a bit confusing and there are a number of factors to consider before decide to part with your money.

Will you be keeping the can in your car?

A Plastic Container can emit fumes through the plastic lining of the can (this is called diurnal emissions) and can be more noticeable in warmer weather. This is something to consider if you are keeping your fuel can in the car at all times.

Our Steel Fuel cans eliminate diurnal emissions completely so are very suitable for leaving in the boot of your car.

Do you need to take the container abroad?

There is currently no clear legal guidelines regarding taking fuel cans abroad, but ferry companies may restrict you on the type of can you can take. They also all have different rulings regarding the amount of fuel you can take onboard.

What is the capacity of the tank you will be filling?

If you are filling up a small chainsaw or lawnmower you could find it much more practical to use a 5 litre jerry can. Depending on your strength, a full 20 litre fuel can also be heavy to lift.
We recommend purchasing a flexible pouring spout to avoid spillage and to make refuelling much easier.

Plastic fuel cans are cheaper than steel ones. So if price is a big factor for you a plastic container may be the best option.

What will you be using the Petrol Container / Jerry Can for?
 

Our regular steel fuel cans are not recommended to use for the storing of water as water can actually cause the breakdown of the special interior Rezol enamel lining.
Some people use our stainless steel cans for storing water (especially on boats) or for a cheaper, but very practical alternative have a look at our of our nato approved plastic water containers, these are ideal and are used by everyone from military organisations to aid agencies to caravaners.
